Post colonial festival, Festac 77 inspires a font - Afrotype

Tac One is more than just a typeface; it's a bold tribute to African cultural heritage, inspired by the iconic wordmark of Festac '77, a landmark festival in Africa's post-colonial history. The result is a bold, single-style, sans-serif typeface that supports over 900 languages, with a strong emphasis on African languages, covering more than 570 of them.

Tac typeface by Afrotype is deeply rooted in the history of Festac '77, one of Africa's most significant post-colonial cultural events. The design process began with an in-depth study of the original lettering's construction and contrast model. According to Afrotype, the team "deduced that the contrast model is translational" and focused on crafting the characters using three main shape elements "80-degree broad brush straights, 180-degree broad brush curves , and then for horizontal strokes, 90 degrees." These guided the iterative design process, which involved transformations like reflection and mirroring.

"A full set of over 1100 glyphs"

The outcome of this meticulous design process is a complete typeface set that extends far beyond the original Festac '77 wordmark. Afrotype notes that after "several months of iteration, they successfully developed a full set of over 1100 glyphs, including letters, numbers, and punctuation". The final product maintains the cultural essence of its inspiration while being functional for modern use, making it a versatile tool for designers seeking to incorporate African heritage into contemporary projects.
