Niyi Okeowo collaborated with ART X Lagos to develop the art direction for ART X Live!24, a platform that brings together live music and visual art. This collaboration explored the theme of "Promised Lands," presenting an immersive experience that bridges Nigeria's musical heritage with contemporary sounds and imagery.
ART X Lagos, West Africa's premier international art fair, showcases and celebrates contemporary African culture and its diaspora. Since its founding in 2016, ART X Lagos has grown into a global hub, hosting artists and galleries from over 70 countries and attracting audiences from 170 nations. Beyond a traditional art fair, ART X Lagos presents a dynamic program that includes film, design, and immersive experiences. Among these, ART X Live! serves as a unique stage for musical and visual exploration, connecting talent across generations and genres. With this year’s ART X Live!24 event, curated by Lanre Masha and Ayo Lawson, the platform is set to blend indigenous sounds with modern genres in a celebration of Nigeria’s musical journey.
Niyi’s direction for ART X Live!24 captures a distinctive aesthetic that reflects its curatorial theme, "Promised Lands." Drawing from both contemporary and traditional sources, Niyi’s art direction integrates modular circuit board designs, the iconic African fabric pattern "aso-oke," and elements inspired by the works of Anni Albers, in combination with the use of Tac font from Afrotype. "The aim was to create a parallel between tech patterns + grid structure and traditional African motifs," Niyi explains, highlighting how these visual cues set the stage for an experience that bridges the past, present, and future.
